Special Populations and What Really Works

Earlier this school year, Dr. Tracy Teaff of the University of North Texas presented a wonderful workshop in Waco called “Special Populations & What Really Works: I’ll Take a Bottle of That!” The workshop included several topics such as understanding the learner, best practices, and what works with motivation, behavior and engagement of these learners.

Heart of Texas Tech Prep Consortium graciously hosted several attendees from Central Texas. Numerous resources from that workshop have been made available to share. If you are interested in receiving the resources please email Carol Lance at carol.lance@templejc.edu or Sherry Hollinger at shollin@templejc.edu.

AchieveTexas Update

This update is based on presentations by Terry Brock of the Texas Counselors’ Network at the April 11 workshop, Preparing Students for the Workforce of Tomorrow, and by Dr. Karen Alexander at the May 1 Tech Prep Directors’ Meeting.

AchieveTexas is a college and career initiative designed to:
• improve student achievement – both academic and technical
• promote successful transitions from secondary to postsecondary education
• support workforce and economic development
AchieveTexas is a framework that supports other initiatives and educational programs.

There are 81 programs of study developed under the 16 career clusters and 115 model examples that have been researched and reviewed. Districts can access the programs of study through the AchieveTexas website. The programs of study are saved in an Excel spreadsheet with sections that can be edited/customized by the local district to include suggested coursework, certifications, articulation agreements and extended learning experiences.

Upcoming products include:
• E-zines of current guides on AchieveTexas website – due around the end of May
• Spanish College and Career Planning Guide – due around October 2008
• Best practices guidebooks for local implementation and counselor implementation
• Implementation guides – new version due out this summer

Surveys on the AchieveTexas program are on the website at www.achievetexas.org.
