Local Articulation Agreement Opportunity
One of the Consortium goals for this year is to assist partner schools in updating/adding local articulation agreements. The first opportunity has been scheduled for next week. Area school districts interested in updating or adding local articulation agreements with Central Texas College in the Agriculture and Industrial program areas are invited to attend a meeting at the college on Wednesday, October 20, 2004, beginning at 9:00 AM. The Industrial areas include Auto, Welding, Diesel, Building Trades, Graphics & Printing, Auto Collision and HVAC. Don Donaldson will meet with those interested in one of the Industrial areas beginning at 9:00 AM. Zhan Aljoe will be available for Ag beginning at 10:15 AM. Both meetings will take place in Room 25 (Air Conditioning Lab) of Building 118 at Central Texas College. High School teachers should bring a list of current courses – course numbers (TEKS), titles and descriptions. Those interested in Ag should also bring an outline of course objectives. A four/six year plan would be very helpful for Tech Prep articulations. Advanced Technology Middle College for East Bell County
In 1998, the Temple Chamber of Commerce Education Committee identified the need for an advanced technology center in east Bell County. The following year, Belton ISD, Temple College, and Temple ISD began a partnership to work on such a center. In 2000, a committee of these three institutions along with Tech Prep and Workforce Development began to identify opportunities and challenges. The different ISD daily schedules were identified as a major impediment to the project, so in 2002, the schedules were more closely aligned. Tech Prep commissioned a study to identify cost and strategies for the next step of the project in 2003. During the summer of 2004, an inter-local agreement between Temple College and Belton and Temple Independent Schools Districts was signed and a Project Champion determined.
Additional information about the history, goals and vision of the Advanced Technology Middle College for East Bell County is available on the Central Texas Tech Prep Consortium website at www.centraltexastechprep.com or you may link directly to the section at http://www.centraltexastechprep.com/atc/index.html. An online survey is available on the site for parents, students, faculty & administrators, workforce and business partners from the east Bell County area.

CATEMA System Central Texas Tech Prep Consortium has purchased the CATEMA (Career And Technology Education Management Application) system and is in the process of implementing the system with a pilot group of area school districts. Developed by STATco, the system is used for managing Tech Prep information relating to courses, classes, school districts, high schools, teachers, counselors, college registrars, college advisors, and students. Twenty three of the 26 Tech Prep consortia in Texas are currently using the system.
The web application is designed to provide a simple method to enter, update, display and report Tech Prep and Career and Technology Education related information. The web-based interface allows students, teachers, counselors, and school administrators to establish and maintain their own user accounts. Teacher recommendations for credit are available to college counselors and registrars. The CATEMA system will be available to all CTTPC partners in the next few weeks.
Tech Prep Ambassadors Fifteen students from seven area high schools have been selected as Tech Prep Ambassadors for this year. The Tech Prep Ambassador program is a "Best Practice" program aimed at getting career and technology students to become advocates for career and technology and Tech Prep on their respective high school campuses. Training is scheduled for October 26 at Temple College. Jody Askins and Brenda Wilkerson from Wilsonart International will serve as trainers for the students this year.

Tech Prep and Communities in Schools
(posted June 2004)
About 60 students are getting a jump start on their futures during the 2004 Communities In Schools summer program being held in June at Temple College.
The students, all upcoming freshmen at Temple High, will spend three weeks earning high school credit in health and career exploration during the annual program which combines classroom study with guest speakers, special activities and field trips to enhance their high school years and beyond. To foster educational goals, the program activities are held at Temple College, giving students a preview of the daily routine on a college campus. The Central Texas Tech Prep Consortium made a presentation to the students and passed out Tech Prep materials. "We think it is very important for young people to start thinking about college and in particular Career and Technology programs," S. Chuck McCarter, Director of the Consortium said.
This program is a multi-purpose program. Not only do students receive credit for attending summer school, they also build relationships with other students and receive information that will help them make positive choices during their high school years. By having the program at Temple College, the students become familiar with a college campus and programs offered so that it does not seem threatening when they begin to make choices for after high school.
Twenty students from each of the three Temple Middle Schools, Bonham, Lamar and Travis, were selected to participate in the program based on recommendations from teachers. The students spend the morning in health class and career class and afternoons are devoted to presentations on such teen issues as alcohol awareness, tobacco use, self-respect, dating issues, and sexually transmitted diseases. Other presentations will include tips on success as a high school students, internet safety, and employment.

Committee Meets to Discuss Development of 8-Year Plans
(posted April 2004)
A planning committee for Tech Prep/Transition and Transfer (TnT) met Wednesday, April 14, at Temple College's Health Sciences Center to discuss the development of a series of 8-year model plans that will facilitate students through seamless pathways beginning in high school and continuing through community college and on to a baccalaureate with a university with exit points along the way. Representatives from Belton, Killeen and Temple school districts, Central Texas College, Temple College, University of Texas at Arlington, and the Central Texas Tech Prep Consortium attended the meeting.
The group selected three writing teams representing the program areas of Business, CIS, and Health Sciences. Each writing team will consist of a CATE Director, counselor, content specialists, college faculty, and business advisor. Each team will meet and create 8-year plans bringing the suggested models back to the group for discussion/possible adoption. The focus group will reconvene on June 29 for discussion and adoption of the deliverables.

"Successful Transitions" Theme for Area Counselors' Network Workshop
(posted April 2004)
"Successful Transitions" for students pursuing higher education was the central theme of a Counselor's Network workshop and luncheon April 23, 2004, at Central Texas College.
Sponsored by the Central Texas Tech Prep Consortium and the Central Texas Counselors' Network, the workshop provided valuable information about transitioning to college. Twenty-one college technical program faculty members from Central Texas College and Temple College provided the audience with pertinent information and requirements for their respective programs. About forty area counselors, advisors, teachers and students attended the workshop.
Welcoming the group to the campus was Mr. Ben Wickersham, Deputy Chancellor for Educational Program and Support Services at Central Texas College.
Retired Gen. Robert Shoemaker from Partners in Education spoke on the Central Texas Two-Step program. This program helps provide a seamless pathway for students from area high schools to community colleges to universities.
Dr. Andrew Wolf, Division Director of TRIO at Temple College, spoke on the importance of programs like TRIO to the success of students in college, particularly those whose parents did not attend college or who have other disadvantages. The TRIO program at Temple College has a high success rate but is limited in the number of students who can be served.
Keynote speaker was Dr. Karen Clos-Bleeker, Vice President of Educational Services at Temple College. In a light-hearted presentation, Dr. Bleeker's lessons in life inspired attendees to "learn from other's mistakes and to be true to themselves". She gave examples in her own life where she was able to succeed through perseverance and through others having faith in her.
