Register Now for Summer Workshop

Central Texas Tech Prep Consortium is offering a contextual learning workshop with Theresa Spangler June 11-12. “The Perfect Storm – Teachers Must Steer a New Course” addresses the convergence of three events creating the perfect storm in education: the world has changed, schools have changed, and students have changed. The workshop will examine the characteristics of Generation Y and offer practical suggestions to prepare students for life after high school. This workshop is the perfect venue for academic and CTE teachers (8th - 12th grades) to work together and develop lesson plans.

Workshop leader Theresa Spangler is a highly energetic and sought-after national speaker and a high school English teacher from Georgia. Believing that students learn best when they experience the application of knowledge, Theresa is a strong advocate of applied academic curricula. She is also the Tech Prep Site Team Leader at Brunswick High School.

The workshop will be held at the Temple College Pavilion from 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM each day. There are a limited number of stipends available to teachers from member districts. Registration for this event is open May 1 - May 29. To register, please go to the www.centraltexastechprep.com website. Click on Teacher Training, Register online, complete the form and click on Sign me up.

For more information, please contact Carol Lance (254-298-8480) or Sherry Hollinger (254-298-8482).

Culinary Arts Education Opportunities

According to “Food for Thought”, a publication of the Texas Restaurant Association, Texas has a $33 billion food industry which employs close to one million people. As culinary careers become increasingly popular and as high schools upgrade facilities from residential style kitchens to professional kitchens, many are looking for ways to provide industry based education opportunities for their students.

In addition to helping school districts with curriculum and resources, the Texas Restaurant Association Education Foundation offers several training opportunities such as the Culinary Educators Training Conference scheduled for June 30-July 2 in Austin and the Teachers Externship Program scheduled during the summer months. Information/Highlights from the Education Open Source Conference Continued

Building Workforce Education Community Partnerships by Debra Mills of CORD
• A survey of over 400 U.S. employers revealed that the most important skill sets new entrants (recent high school, community college and university graduates) need to succeed in the workplace are professionalism/work ethic, oral and written communications, teamwork/collaboration, critical thinking/problem solving. These skills should be infused throughout the curriculum.
• Secondary and postsecondary advisory committees in each pathway could possibly merge to one committee to better integrate with business and industry.
• Creating a partnership takes time, effort and lasting commitment. Understand the national and local trends affecting local workforce employment conditions, know the details of company culture and training, be a solution for employer needs, and stay engaged with the business community and look for ways to expand services for learner and employers.

Dr. Raymund Paredes, Commissioner of Higher Education, Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board
• The Closing the Gaps campaign to increase participation in postsecondary education continues. The national average for high school students going to college within 15 months of graduation is 65%. The average rate for a high school student in Texas going to college within 15 months is less than 50%. This rate must be improved, or the Texas economy will be negatively impacted.
• College readiness standards were strongly emphasized. Retention and success, however, will be more important than enrollment.

Connecting Education & the Economy for Educators – Richard Froeschle, LMCI, TWC
• To improve the connection between education and the economy, one must recognize what demographic phenomena are driving the labor force pool, what phenomena do employers react/respond to that shape the demand for worker skills and educational preparation, and what drives education and training program offerings, costs and priorities.
• Student career interests and majors in college often do not align with actual careers needed in the labor market. In Texas there are more openings than graduates for registered nurses, elementary teachers, computer systems analysts, software engineers and clergy, but are more graduates than openings for historians, accountants, graphic designers, clinical psychologists, journalists, art directors, advertising executives, and film/video editors.

A number of presentations from the conference have been posted online at www.ctat.org/events/08present.html. Others will be added as they are received.
